Yesterday we drove to the eastern side of Hungary to visit two new camps. We stayed for the closing program for the parents/grandparents in Berettyoujfalu, making our return to Budapest quite late. All four teams are returning today and we’ll have a glorious report time tonight. Before I return home on Tuesday, I’ll write a summary report for 2018, but for today, I’m going to focus on Berettyoujfalu. The team from my home church in McKinney, Texas, was serving in Berettyoujfalu, two of them are staff members, two are first-timers, and one couple was there with their Hungarian daughter-in-law. (Their son met and fell in love with his translator when he came to work in the first year of camps in 2013.)
The church at Berettyoujfalu has a new building because a few years ago the roof collapsed in a rain storm. Fortunately, everyone was out of the building at the time. Their pastor is new as well. He came from a near-by town that had had a camp for several years and he wanted his new congregation to experience English-Bible camps.
Several surprises occurred during the week, as they always do. From the very first day, parents and grandparents wanted to stay and sit in the classes. By the second day, with twelve adults, they formed their own adult class. Most of these people had never spoken a word of English. There were three children’s classes, starting with six-year-olds. Translators came from everywhere. As always, great food was in abundance, almost instant bonds of love and friendship were evident everywhere, and God’s word was taught. There were 33 children and 14 adults in class during the week.
The pastor was so pleased with the number of visitors who came for the final program. He preached a little and we all sang together. Afterwards, there was an “ice cream social” but we had to leave for Budapest. The church is planning to continue the English-Bible classes every month with their own teachers, and they are ready to do the follow-up with the families. (I actually heard from several places that they were going to try to continue the Bible-study part of our camp throughout the year.
The beautiful weather has held, for the most part, all during our time here.
